Editors Calendar
Background
This calendar was created with one main goal that presented multiple challenges. The goal was to promote editors and the important work they do behind the scenes. Each person had been given a list of questions to respond to, providing me with an abundance of text to include on each month. The client also requested a fun and colorful design that combined the brand colors of the two main collaborators and a custom pattern that I created for her business.
Due to the abundance of visual elements, it would be important to present all the information without overwhelming the viewer.
Research
I spent some time researching national holidays, choosing special days related to publishing, and learning more about editing along the way.
This project involved using Photoshop to remove photo backgrounds. I used Illustrator for the remainder of the work due to its versatility and ability to create the necessary design elements.
Strategy
Aesthetics
The client was collaborating with another business and wanted me to incorporate the colors from both brands to communicate an equal partnership. The colors went very well together, and made a nice gradient background. I placed the editorial marks pattern over that and set it to a low opacity to minimizer clutter and distraction.
Other design elements have a painterly texture, communicating the hands-on nature of the work and the fun aesthetic of the project and featured editors.
Function
Text elements need to be legible and have a clear hierarchy, especially with so much information on one page. I placed framing shapes behind most of the text to separate it from the background, group certain elements together for clarity, and make it easier to read. Each page is nearly identical in layout, allowing the written content to stand out as the featured element.
Results
The client and her collaborator were very happy with the final design. It became a popular item in their shops, and was a fun way to promote and support other people in the field.
Client Review
“Caitlyn contributed significantly to our social media and marketing efforts at Pique Publishing. I was consistently impressed by the quality of her designs. She listened attentively to my ideas and would deliver great quality design samples. Caitlyn is also committed to following through with all of the projects she was assigned. She works well independently, on her own, without needing to be handheld. I am thoroughly impressed with her work and tried to convince her to stay after her internship ended! I hope she comes back to Pique Publishing after she graduates from school because her enthusiasm and motivation to do a great job is not something easily found in a design intern..”
