Artist Brand
Background
Before I was a graphic designer, I was an artist. Drawing was my passion, but I couldn’t choose a single art or craft form that I wanted to restrict myself to. I sold my work at craft fairs and won awards at the fair.
My cousin nicknamed me Katydid. And because I loved all things creative, the name was born.
Research
I looked at pictures of katydids (an insect similar to a grasshopper) and sketched out ideas of how I could create an icon that would encapsulate that look in a way that would communicate my personality.
Strategy
Aesthetics
I used “K” and “C” from Katydid Corner to form the shapes that compose the body. The green color is light and friendly, and creates a calm palette with the soft gray.
Function
I framed the katydid within a square and rounded all but one corner to tie into the name. There is also visual synergy between the typography and icon with the rounded corners and insect leg echoed in the letters.
Results
I placed this logo on a sign mockup to inspire and motivate me to open a shop someday. It’s still a dream of mine. For now, my work lives on Instagram.
